Tarmizi, staf pengajar di Departemen Teknik Elektro dan Komputer Fakultas Teknik Universitas Syiah Kuala BandaAceh. Menyelesaikannya Sarjana Teknik Elektro (S.T) pada Fakultas Teknik Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) pada tahun 1998. Magister Electrical Engineering (M.Sc) diselesaikan pada tahun 2018 dan Program Doktor (Ph.D) pada tahun 2018 di Universiti Sains Malaysia. Program Profesi Insiyur (Ir) diselesaikan di Universitas Gajah Mada pada tahun 2022. Saat ini bergabung dalam kelolompok keahlian dosen Teknik Tenaga Listrik dan Energi Terbarukan.
