Nurjannah started working as a teaching staff in the Public Health Department, Medical School, Syiah Kuala University in 2006. She graduated as a Medical Doctor (MD) from the Medical School, Syiah Kuala University in 2004. Then, she continued her master's degree in Public Health at the University of Sheffield, UK funded by a British Scholarship, and graduated in 2008. She also graduated with her doctoral degree in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences from Western Michigan University, USA in 2018. She received a Fulbright Scholarship for her doctoral degree. Her research combines geographic methods for spatial and temporal analysis using geographic information systems (GIS) with public health such as diabetes, neonatal and maternal health, environmental health, etc. During her study, she was awarded a student research grant from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation. Her research focus includes chronic diseases, infectious diseases, maternal and child health, and mental health in various settings including school.
