Gartika Setiya Nugraha was born in Bandung on February 22, 1974. He completed his education from elementary school to university in Bandung. He obtained a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Geological Engineering from the Bandung Institute of Technology, Indonesia 1999. From 1996 to 1997, he worked as a Junior Geologist on a faculty project for PT. Caltex Indonesia. From 2000 to 2003, he joined a company engaged in graphic design, and from 2003 to 2006, he joined a consulting firm involved in coal and iron ore mining. In 2005, he continued his education at the master's level in the Earth Sciences program at the Faculty of the Bandung Institute of Technology and graduated in 2008. He joined Syiah Kuala University (USK) in 2006 as a lecturer in the Faculty of Engineering, and he is one of the founders of the newly established Geological Engineering program at the Faculty of Engineering, USK, in 2014. His research interests include Structural Geology, Sedimentology, Stratigraphy, and Geological Exploration.
