Saumi Syahreza Anwar is a lecturer and researcher in the Department of Physics, Syiah Kuala University (USK), Indonesia. With a strong foundation in applied physics, particularly in atmospheric and environmental processes, his work focuses on hydrometeorological disasters and climate change. He develops practical and data-driven approaches for flood prediction, early warning systems, and climate risk assessment through the integration of remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and computational programming. He is also actively involved in the Hydrometeorological Hazards and Climate Change Research Cluster at the Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC), USK. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Computational Physics from USK and his Master’s degree in Physics Instrumentation from Institut Teknologi Bandung. He later earned his Ph.D. in Remote Sensing of Environmental Studies from Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2015 under the Dikti Scholarship Program, where he developed a hybrid algorithm combining principal component analysis (PCA) and machine learning for ocean color remote sensing. His experience covers a wide range of Earth observation data, including LANDSAT, ALOS, Sentinel-1 SAR, MODIS, ERA5 reanalysis dataset, and high-resolution imagery from Planet Labs. He applies physics-based understanding together with GIS-based spatial analysis and programming tools such as MATLAB, Python, and ENVI-IDL to analyze environmental dynamics and hydrometeorological hazards. His research combines statistical and machine learning methods with physical modeling to better understand environmental processes and improve the accuracy of hazard prediction, particularly for floods and extreme rainfall. His work has been applied to support flood risk assessment and early warning efforts in Indonesia, especially in Aceh, contributing to more effective disaster risk reduction, climate adaptation strategies, and sustainable environmental management. He has received several research and innovation grants and is actively engaged in international scientific communities, including MRSS, PORSEC, and ISPRS.
