Alfi Rahman is Senior Lecturer and Director of the Research Center for Social and Cultural Studies (PRISB) at Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK), Banda Aceh, Indonesia. He also researches at the Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC). At USK, he teaches in the Master's Program in Peace and Conflict Resolution and in the Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Disaster Science. Alfi earned his PhD from Tohoku University, Japan (2018), a Master’s in Disaster Science from Universitas Syiah Kuala (2014), and a Bachelor’s in Communication.
His research focuses on how Acehnese communities understand, remember, and respond to disasters and conflict, with particular attention to the intergenerational transmission of memories of the Aceh conflict and the 2004 tsunami. He applies sociological and anthropological approaches to examine the impact of culture, communication, and indigenous knowledge on disaster resilience and community preparedness.
Alfi participates in international research collaborations, including projects with the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAENG) and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), focusing on digital disaster risk reduction and resilient school communities. His research often uses community-based approaches to disaster mitigation and post-conflict recovery in disaster-prone areas such as Aceh.
He is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Disaster Management (IJDM), a journal that advances research in disaster studies and risk reduction.
