I have been joining as a lecturer and researcher at the Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Sciences, Universitas Syiah Kuala since 2006. I had my bachelor degree (S1) in Biology from Bogor Agricultural University in 2005, finished my master program (S2) in Medical and Molecular Microbiology in 2008 at the University of Manchester, Manchester, UK before completing my doctoral program (S3) in Cell and Molecular Biology at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville-AR, USA in 2016.
For undergraduate levels, I am teaching Microbiology, Microbial Physiology, Microbial Genetics, as well as Biology. Additionally, I am also teaching Microbial Ecology for graduate level.
My research interests focus on the dissemination and persistence of antibiotic resistance genes encoded within mobile genetic elements, particularly bacterial integrons and plasmids. The genes are easily transferred and mobilized from and to the same or different bacteria in the environment through horizontal gene transfers, especially by means of conjugation. The genes might be harboured within bacterial pathogens in nocosomial and environmental settings. In the environment, such as aquatic system, the antibiotic-resistant pathogenic bacteria tend to propagate and persist allowing them to disseminate their resistance through horizontal gene transfer. This is primarily owing to the occurrence of selective pressure effects, i.e. antibiotics found in the aquatic system, select antibiotic-resistant bacteria as surviving microorganisms over the susceptible ones.
Morevoer, I have also research interests on searching natural products potentially to be applied as antibiofilm agents. Currently, I have research on Kelor (Moringa oleifera) and waru (Hibiscus tiliaceus) extracts that significantly inhibited the biofilm formation of Vibrio alginolyticus, a pathogenic bacterium on fish and prawn aquaculture. Biofilm often facilitate a community of bacteria encased in a matrix of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) that irreversibly attaches the bacterial cells to a surface serving as a protective niche for particular pathogens from environmental threats, host defenses, and antibiotics, leading to an increase in bacterial pathogenicity and antibiotic resistance.
